Family Life & Local Favorites: Insights from the Joedecke Family

Boomer

When Jim and Stephanie first arrived in Georgia, neither imagined they would one day put down such deep roots in Braselton. Jim, originally from Connecticut, came south for college, stayed to pursue a law degree, and never looked back. Stephanie grew up in Indiana and moved here in 2004 for a job in Duluth. A couple of years later, the two were starting their life together, looking for a place to call home. In 2006, they settled into Braselton, and over the years, they’ve built not just a family but a true community around them. Looking back, they often laugh that they wish BeLocal had been around then—it would have made learning about the area, meeting people, and discovering hidden gems so much easier.

Today, their household is full of energy thanks to their three children—Elizabeth, 13, Jimmy, 11, and Carmela, 10. Like many families in Braselton, the kids’ schedules keep everyone on the move. Elizabeth and Jimmy attend Osborne Middle, while Carmela is at Duncan Creek Elementary. Jimmy plays football with the Mill Creek youth program, while Elizabeth splits her time between cheering on the Osborne sidelines and competing with her All-Star team at Pro Cheer. Carmela is also part of the All-Star program, giving the sisters plenty of chances to share in the excitement of cheer together. Watching their kids form friendships and grow in these programs has been one of the most rewarding parts of raising a family here.

Even though Jim and Stephanie don’t have immediate family nearby, they’ve always believed in making friends feel like family. Over time, their network has grown through school events, sports teams, and neighborhood gatherings. Stephanie plays on several tennis teams and enjoys being part of local women’s groups, while Jim once served as a Braselton town councilman. Together, they support Home of Hope at Gwinnett Children’s Shelter, a nonprofit that holds a special place in their hearts. Jim serves on the board, and Stephanie helps with the annual gala, both of them committed to making an impact in the lives of children.

At home, their four-year-old English cream retriever, Boomer, keeps everyone smiling. He’s as handsome as he is cuddly, and he’s well cared for by Chateau Animal Hospital and the groomers at Puppy Pantry. When the family travels, trusted neighborhood sitters step in so Boomer never has to leave the comfort of home.

For nights out, Jim and Stephanie have discovered a handful of local favorites. If they sneak away for a date, chances are you’ll find them at the Marc or Cotton Calf, two of the area’s go-to restaurants for a night that feels special. For family meals, they love takeout from Jacks Bar & Grill and casual lunches at Sarazen’s, Unami Tavern, or Local Station. Shopping for gifts often leads them to Piper Lillies, a charming boutique where they can always find something unique.
Most of their kids’ birthday parties happen at home—the backyard pool makes entertaining easy and memorable—but they also enjoy the parks and seasonal activities that pop up around town.

Faith is another part of their rhythm. The family attends Prince of Peace Catholic Church, where they’ve found both fellowship and grounding. And when time allows, Jim and Stephanie enjoy joining friends for Friday night couples’ scrambles at The Legends golf course, a mix of lighthearted competition and community over dinner afterward.

Looking back, the decision to settle in Braselton has shaped not only where they live but how they live. From strong schools and youth programs to family-run restaurants and shops, from volunteer opportunities to close-knit friendships, the town has given them far more than an address—it has given them a community. Their advice to anyone new to the area is simple: get involved, show up, and embrace the local spirit. In no time, you’ll find that the people around you become more than neighbors; they become the family you didn’t know you had.
