Rooted in the Valley, Running Toward Change
Serendipity and kismet perfectly describe the journey of Alfredo Cazarez and Rachel Hernandez. As young professionals rooted in the Central Valley, these two embody personal connection, community service, and making a difference.
Both grew up in Stanislaus County—Rachel in Salida (Davis High) and Alfredo in Modesto (Downey High). They later graduated from CSU Stanislaus but didn’t meet until after college.
Now Mayor of Riverbank, Rachel is passionate about economic development and supporting local businesses. She believes spots like coffee shops are the “social heartbeat” of a community. “For so long, downtowns were viewed as an economic hub…rethinking downtowns as the city’s social driver can lead to a new perspective and investment, care, and innovation.” Alongside her mayoral duties, she’s a professor at Modesto Junior College, inspiring the next generation.
Alfredo works in marketing at Valley Strong Credit Union, where he combines financial literacy with community impact. Their story began during Rachel’s mayoral campaign when their first date was at Queen Bean Coffee. Around the same time, Alfredo launched the 209 Run Club—born from his post-COVID health journey and desire to build something meaningful. A transformative half-marathon in Santa Barbara sparked his vision for an inclusive running group in the Central Valley. “Inclusivity has to be intentional, and I am proud to have co-founded this group of like-minded runners. I am excited to celebrate many more years with them!”
Now a year in, 209 Run Club partners with local businesses and collaborates with other groups to promote health, encouragement, and connection. One standout moment? Mentoring a 9-year-old club member who sees him as a role model.
Rachel and Alfredo are CSU alumni who chose careers aligned with their values. Alfredo, who once worked in sports marketing with the Stockton Kings, now helps individuals with personalized financial strategies. Rachel leads civic initiatives like “Meet the Mayor” events, creating platforms for engagement and trust.
Together, their relationship is rooted in learning and growth—Rachel, a self-proclaimed “nerd,” dives into policy while Alfredo introduces her to sports (including half-marathon training, despite her claim that she’s “not a runner”). Whether connecting small businesses, local animal shelters, or community members through their hobbies, they lead by example.
Their mission is clear: to make the Central Valley not just a place to live but a thriving, connected community.
