Arts
For a city its size, Greenville has an outstanding
array of cultural amenities that provide a wonderful
quality of life for residents and a major attraction for
visitors and tourists: A world-class performing arts
center, four thriving theaters, a choral group that is
59 years old, an amazing symphony, a museum that
houses two of the largest collections of Jasper Johns
and Andrew Wyeth in the world, a nationally ranked
spring arts festival, two dance companies, an upstate
history museum and a children’s museum, to name
just a few. Because of these organizations and many
others, Greenville is the envy of cities with much
larger populations. There are artist studios and arts
groups in virtually every neighborhood throughout
the greater Greenville area.
Just in the last few years, there has been an influx of artists to
the area because of the many opportunities that are available
in Greenville. Founded in 2015, the Greenville Center for
Creative Arts in the village of West Greenville provides art
classes to the public as well and studio and exhibition space
for local artists. Events like First Fridays and Greenville Open
Studios provide a fantastic awareness of the talent and
professionalism of resident visual artists.
Since 1973, the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) of Greenville
has provided funding and other vital services to individual
artists, arts organizations and arts education programs
throughout Greenville County. In its 46-year history, MAC has
played a major role in the expansion and diversification of
Greenville’s outstanding cultural community.
A great way to experience the arts in Greenville is through the
MAC ArtCard. With a donation of just $50-plus, you are able
to buy-one-get-one-free tickets for one time at each of the
following venues for one full year. In just two uses the ArtCard
gift pays for itself.
