Ensuring Saftey & Resilience

Living in Southwest Florida means beautiful coastlines, warm weather—and a real responsibility to prepare for hurricane season. The season runs from June 1 to November 30, with peak activity from mid-August through October. In areas of Sarasota County the biggest threat isn’t just wind—it’s water.

Storm surge and flooding are the primary risks. Even storms that make landfall miles away can push several feet of water into low-lying neighborhoods. Standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage, making a separate flood policy essential.

Know your flood and evacuation zone.
Start by looking up your property on your county’s website or FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center. You can also enter your address into your county’s evacuation zone tool to see if you’re in Zone A, B, C, etc. This determines how early you may need to leave.

Indoor Preparation
Preparation starts before a storm is named. Inside your home, keep a stocked hurricane kit with water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents sealed in waterproof containers. A backup power source can make a major difference during outages.

Outdoor Preparation
Outside, secure patio furniture, garbage cans, inspect your roof, and clear gutters. Impact protection like shutters or screens is a smart investment in SWFL, where debris becomes dangerous quickly.

Quick Checklist
  • Monitor local alerts and forecasts daily
  • Charge phones, backup batteries, and devices
  • Fill vehicles with gas early
  • Bring in outdoor furniture and secure loose items
  • Set refrigerator/freezer to the coldest setting
  • Store water
  • Gather medications, cash, and important documents
  • Photograph your home and valuables for insurance records
  • Review your evacuation zone and be ready to leave if ordered
Aftermath
After the storm, avoid floodwaters, downed lines, and unstable structures. Document damage immediately and contact your insurance provider.

In Southwest Florida, hurricane prep isn’t optional—it’s part of homeownership.
